The Gaia satellite will orbit at a distance of 1.5 million kilometers
above the Earth's surface and remains at an orbit level called "L2 orbit".
At this point the Gaia satellite will begin surveying the stars in the Milky Way
for a 5 year time period
and will take pictures of the stars in our Earth's solar system,
taking at least 70 pictures per star
to build a large 3-D picture repository that covers around a million stars.
The total cost of the satellite Gaia project
is 1.3 billion US dollars.
