Guinea Worm Disease is different from smallpox and polio
in that there is no medicine to treat and no vaccine to prevent the disease.
Dr. Gautam Biswas, team leader in the Guinea Worm Eradication Program
told VOA reporters that
essentially important in eradicating this disease
is detecting the sick who are infected with this parasite
and controlling further spreading.
He said it is very important that people have clean and safe drinking water
to prevent infection.
Providing clean drinking water is controlling the spread of infection
and is promoting health knowledge
as well as helping to change behavior.
