Last winter at the North Pole,
the Russian oil tanker "Renda"
was able to sail to the Port of Nome,
which is far into Alaska, successfully.
Not long ago,
sailing in this area during the months of December and January
was not often possible.
But the warming world climate is making the ice thinner.
There are many ships that travel through ice
that can pass this way year round.
The majority of these ships are involved with looking for oil and gas reserves.
The U.S. Geological Survey
estimates that there are 26 billion barrels of oil
under the Arctic seabed
in an area belonging to the United States of America.
